News and Notes Preseason Week 2 (Friday)

Patriots Practice Football

Doug Martin left the game tonight after only 1 carry for 4 yards with a head injury.  He took a gigantic knee to the head while diving low to pass block.

Martin’s backup is former Miami Hurricane Mike James who is a rookie.  James rushed 15 times for 83 yards.  He has solid 4.5 speed and good size 5-11 and 223 lbs., but would be awesome if he was a little more elusive.  He is more of a straight ahead runner.

Danny Amendola was awesome tonight.  Kid is going to be a beast this season.  Top 10 wideout for sure.  Caught 6 balls for 71 yards and a TD.

Shane Vareen did well running and receiving.  4 rushes for 29 yards and 4 receptions for 46 yards.  Oh if he ever gets the nod as the starter, he will be a beast.

For the record, I love Patriot’s wideout Kenbrell Thompkins, but not as an outside receiver in the Patriot’s offense for my fantasy teams.

Watch out for Zach Sudfeld who is another tight end for the Patriots.  He is 6’7″ with good hands, and you know the Patriots like to run two Tight End sets.  Tonight he had 2 catches for 32 yards and one touchdown.

Nick Toon, the son of former New York Jet Al Toon, is a guy that I will be keeping my eye on.  Haven’t heard much talk on him at all, so I will do all the hyping for the next good receiver for the New Orlean’s Saints.  He is a second year receiver out of Wisconsin who is 6’4″ and 218 pounds and vying for the 4th receivers position.  In my opinion, he should be anointed the spot opposite for Marques Colston as the #2 receiver with Lance Moore running the slot.  Keep your eye out for him in the future.

Backup running back to Jamaal Charles, Knile Davis, had a productive night carrying the ball 10 times for 37 yards and catching 3 balls for 31 yards.

News and Notes Preseason Week 2 (Thursday)

I liked seeing Cleveland’s Josh Gordon go deep and catch a nice 34 yard.  He finished with 3 catches for 72 yards.  And it looked like Weeden is actually an NFL QB throwing to him with his 12-17, 117 yards and 2 touchdowns.

The Brown’s Tight End Jordan Cameron also looked really good catching passes from Weeden.  He caught 2 TOUCHDOWNS on 3 catches for 42 yards.

Matt Stafford looked unimpressive just like last year, but Reggie Bush looked awesome coming out of the backfield to catch passes.

Matt Ryan and Steven Jackson looked solid, but Julio Jones looked like a monster in just minimal work with 3 catches for 55 yards and a score.  It was just the way he went after the ball that was so impressive.  Roddy White tweaked his ankle in the game and has a mild low ankle sprain.

Torrey Smith caught a 77 yard touchdown (2 catches, 82 yards) on an ball across the middle showing great explosiveness and speed on his way to the end zone.

Chip Kelly’s Eagle’s offense had both Michael Vick and Nick Foles looking really sharp.  Yes, they both had a pick, but have you ever seen Michael Vick throw 90% completions in a game.  He was 9 of 10 for 105 yards.

And LeSean McCoy’s wicked ankle breaking double move in open space was sweet to see 10 yards down field.  He had 8 rushes for 47 yards and a score and looked like he did a couple years ago.  If Coach gets him in space, look out cause he looked like he has gotten his confidence back.

Jay Cutler once again is over-targeting Brandon Marshall.  He was 4/5 and all 4 of his completions went to Marshall.  Cutler looked okay at times, and sometimes he still looks like he is afraid the pressure is going to get to him and he takes his eyes off of downfield.  The Bears first round draft choice, Kyle Long, looked like a beast playing right guard though, so this should help both Cutler and Forte, who also looked good.
